Small actions make a difference

We are all painfully aware of the decline in our local birds in the last few decades. Summer visitors like Swallows, House Martins and Swifts, Curlew and Lapwings, once so abundant, are now much fewer. Skylarks, Yellow Hammers and Mistle Thrushes are scarcer. And when did you last hear a Cuckoo?  However, we have had some gains through active conservation and accidental assistance through climate change. White Egrets can be seen on lakes and rivers near here, along with Avocets and visiting Ospreys. We are fortunate that the Snape area is a migration route for many birds in both Spring and Autumn.

By putting up nesting boxes and making our gardens more bird friendly with ponds, planting trees, and pollen rich flowers, we can help all manner of birds, insects, aquatic life, bees, butterflies and moths to flourish. Many of us have bird feeders in our garden and these are great for attracting birds and are particularly helpful in winter months when food is scarce.
